Dear Susan,
Frankly, looking at one `idea' in Feng Shui or using it to audit a house may not provide the full picture.
In your case, try to apply:
1. Shapes and Forms
2. Compass Schools: e.g. Eight House - not only the main door but bedrooms for each family members.
There are more e.g. looking at one's Ba Zi to harmonise with the home e.g. for an individual such as a weak water person such as white walls.
